Trek is definitely the best word to describe the travel to Eldoret. While the journey was not done on foot, as Merriam-Webster defines, it was most certainly long and arduous. While our (Evan and I's) ride to Chicago was relatively painless, the 13-hour flight to Qatar was filled with crying babies (and Evans), yelling passengers, and reclining chairs in our laps. However, we persisted. We reached Doha, Qatar just in time for sunset and LORD was it gorgeous (see pic below). They 100% fly past their downtown on purpose. Hopefully will go back for a true visit!
Our flight to Nairobi was only 6 hours, much improved from the previous flight. There were also significantly less crying children, a definite plus. We landed in Nairobi around 5 minutes before New Years. We rang in 2020 crossing our fingers, hoping our luggage was not lost or fell out of the plane somewhere over the Middle East. Our 6-hour layover was spent in a sketchy cafe where we drank endless Tusker beers, only one of which was flat. By 4:00am we had outstayed our welcome in the cafe and we ventured to check in. The hour flight to Eldoret was right at sunrise and was absolutely gorgeous. We got a great view of the Rift Valley and had 360 mountain views, only slightly obscured by the propellers on the wings. The Eldoret airport welcomed us with open arms, delivered our luggage and we were greeted by the nicest taxi driver. Full of naive trust and promise, we set off into the city of Eldoret towards our home for the next two months.
