Kerio view/Iten

Writer's picture: BexBex

This was the first trip we took once reaching Eldoret! Evan and I did this trip solo the first weekend we were here (Jan 4th) and it was nice to see the amazing views the Kenyans were talking about. It only too 45 minutes to get out to the views of the Rift Valley.

We spent the day climbing down a STEEP cliff through bushes, weeds and thorns. We chanted "pole, pole" (pol-ay), which means "slowly" in Swahili, with our guide as we attempted to not fall down the mountain. We reached the base of the cliff in around ~15 and I was very proud of us. Of course, that feeling didn't last long. Not 5 minutes after reaching the bottom, our guide, Dennis, shouted "okay, now back up!" I stared at the cliff, severely disappointed in my lack of insight, and started to trek back up the steep cliff. It only took us 40 minutes, lots of motivation from our guide, and only a few close-call trips until we reached the top.

At Kerio view, we had an authentic Kenyan lunch with chapati, roasted goat meat (nyama choma), stir-fried kale (sukuma wiki), tomatoes and onions (kachumbari) and ugali (a type of corn meal bread-thing).

Definitely recommend this short day trip! Be prepared for the hike (and definitely stretch a bit afterward).

Overlook at Kerio view.

(Not the goat we ate.)

Gate into Iten, "Home of Champions." There is a huge olympic training camp here for runners around the world. Also, numerous famous Kenyan runners are from Iten. Give it a google!

Thanks for reading!
